Globalization, the Flattening on the Earth

May 9, 2008 / by ElDukerino

The discussion of globalization is a rather heated and complicated one.  There are many factors that can be discussed as to the pros and cons of the situation.  I think that it will eventually be a very positive thing for the whole world in the future.

Looking at the effect that globalization and outsourcing has had here in the United States, it is obvious why many people here view it as an extremely negative thing.  Many people are losing jobs to people overseas as companies find cheaper labor in developing countries.  What people fail to see is the impact that these jobs are having on the developing countries.  After watching Thomas Friedman's documentary on the impact that it has had in India, one can really get a good view of the positives that outsourcing can have.

Jobs are outsourced to places where cheap labor is abundant.  This means that third world and developing countries car being bombarded with these jobs.  So it is bringing prosperity to these countries that previously were racked with poverty and hunger.  In a sense, it is leveling out the world.  When in the past there were places of great prosperity like the United States, Europe, and other developed countries, and then there were places of extreme poverty and famine, the distance between the two has been leveling out.  I can see in the future that globalization will bring the wealth and prosperity of the developed countries to the third world countries, flattening out the vast differences between the countries.

Globalization is a very controversial issue within the modern society.  I personally see it as a positive thing when viewed on a global scale, and that it will eventually lead to the ending of the extreme poverty in third world nations.  And although on the home front, it can lead to fewer jobs, I think it is important to look at in on the global scale.
